Me and My Dental Implants

Updated: Dec 18, 2018

I am a local Petersfield resident, typical, I guess, of many people living here in that I’m in my 60’s, retired, and have most of my own teeth!   I do also, again like many people my age I suspect, also wear a partial denture in my upper jaw for 4 missing teeth that had to come out a few years ago.

My dentures are fine and have done the job for the last few years, but gradually I felt them move around a lot more than they used to.  I started to get bits of food trapped underneath them and generally was becoming moreirritated by them.  There must be another way?! I thought to myself.

Then one day, a friend of mine told me about College Street Dental Centre, in Petersfield.  The Principal of the practice is well renowned for placing dental implants.  During my consultation, Dr Khalessi examined the areas concerned and took a CT scan which showed a 360 degree image of my mouth! Fascinating!

The procedure, the benefits as well as the risks, were clearly explained to me and I must admit it all sounded very straightforward!  The costs were also explained to me:  They are a lot more expensive than dentures.  However the benefits to me were obvious: I wouldn’t need to worry about my teeth moving around, I would be able to eat what I want when I want, and as long as I took care of them they should last me a lifetime!  No more having to have dentures constantly altered and then replaced possibly every 8-10 years, which at my age, 62, could mean another 3 pairs of dentures!!

What finally made me go ahead was the ability to spread the cost of my treatment over 6 months.

The day of my implant surgery arrived, I was slightly nervous admittedly, but I needn’t have been!  The nurse was very calming and reassuring and even held my hand!  The procedure was over before I knew it.  The local anaesthetic was straightforward, and although I could feel a little pushing and pressure occasionally, there was no pain whatsoever.  I was in the chair for less than an hour!

I had to wear my dentures for another 4 months whilst the implants settled into my jaw.  I then went back to have the bridge made and fitted.  Again, the process was seamless and I was denture free just in time for Christmas!

That was a year ago, and I am very much looking forward to this Christmas, eating what I want to eat with my wonderful dental implants.

I cannot recommend this procedure or College Street Dental Centre highly enough.  It has transformed my life.
