We believe in preventative dental care, and as such, regular trips to the hygienist are recommended. A regular visit to the dental hygienist is vital for optimal teeth and gum health.

Gum disease can often occur without any noticeable symptoms. The initial inflammation of the gum, gingivitis, is reversible. Gingivitis usually presents as bleeding gums and will be rectified quickly with good oral hygiene. When the disease progresses, it will result in damage of the structures that support teeth and this is termed, periodontitis.

The plaque (bacteria) that builds up on teeth requires mechanical removal with a toothbrush (Manual / electric ) twice a day. Unfortunately, mouthwash alone will not remove the plaque as it is very sticky, but it can be helpful in addition to brushing. Good tooth brushing alone will not remove the plaque that builds up between teeth, one needs to make us of aids such as floss or interdental brushes as gum disease tends to develop first between the teeth.

Along with your own maintenance, your hygienist will facilitate your cleaning regime with scaling and occasionally root surface debridement. Hardened deposits of plaque, named calculus will need professional removal. Advanced gum disease takes time and motivation to resolve.

There are some common risk factors associated with gum disease and to mention a few, these are:

* Poor Oral Hygiene

* Smoking

* Stress
* Family History
* Systemic Medical Diseases e.g. Diabetes
* Hormonal changes e.g. Pregnancy
