Multiple Implant Retained Overdenture

Dental Implants Petersfield

If you are replacing several or all of your teeth, one of the most common treatments available is to have removable partial or full dentures. With conventional dentures, however, the bone that previously surrounded the tooth roots begins to resorb (deteriorate). Because implant retained overdentures will replace some of your tooth roots, your bone levels are preserved.

Implant retained overdentures are removable dentures that are held in place by a clip or bar that is attached to the dental implants.

Dental implants look and function like natural teeth. Furthermore, Implant-supported overdentures dentures also are more comfortable and stable than conventional dentures, allowing you to retain a more natural biting and chewing capacity.

Firstly, implants, which are titanium screws are placed into the jawbone to act as the ‘roots’. The number of implants required will vary from case to case and this will be discussed during your consultation. These are then left in place to integrate with the bone to form anchors for the artificial teeth. You may be able to wear your existing dentures during this time as the implants will be ‘covered’ over. As the dental implants integrate with your jaw it actually helps to preserve bone levels.

After this healing period, which is usually 4-6 months, the implants are ‘uncovered’. A small extension in the form of a metal post, known as an abutment, is fixed to the implants, along with a connecting device, usually in the form of a bar or clip. The bespoke permanent replacement dentures created for you by our chosen dental laboratory can then be snapped on and off at ease.

The whole process will be complete in around 6-9 months. After a short time, you will experience restored confidence in your ability to chew and speak.
