Is it a Good Idea to Rinse Immediately After Brushing?

Updated: Dec 17, 2018

Any dentist will observe that the key to maintaining a bright smile is associated with adopting the proper brushing techniques. It is therefore ironic to note that many of us may have been incorrectly performing this seemingly simple process. Studies have found that toothpaste residue should remain in the mouth for at least ten minutes after brushing.

Why is this the case and what other observations have been made?

  • Prolonged contact with toothpaste will help to further strengthen tooth enamel.

  • Minerals such as fluoride will be better absorbed when they remain in contact longer.

  • To avoid cavities and gingivitis, it is wise to brush and floss at least two times every day.

"The main benefit of toothpaste is the fluoride, which helps prevent cavities. The longer you keep the fluoride on your teeth, the fewer cavities you should have."
